Reverse Osmosis vs Distilled Water [Which one is healthier]

You've probably come across reverse osmosis systems and water distillers when seeking ways to acquire the purest and healthiest water in your home. While both of these offer contaminant-free water, they do it in very different ways.

Both of them provide cleaned water, but which is superior when it comes to reverse osmosis vs distilled water? Is it really making a difference? You should be able to tell the difference between reverse osmosis and water distillation at the end of this essay.

You'll also know which one is best for your personal needs, allowing you to begin drinking healthier water right away.
What exactly is purified water?

Purified water is water that has been processed by distillation or reverse osmosis. But exactly what is purified water?

Water must be purified if it contains less than 10 parts per million (PPM) of total dissolved solids. This indicates that the water is 99 percent free of all pollutants, including minerals that are good for your health.

It also implies that no pollutants are present. Purification removes bacteria, protozoa, chemicals, minerals, metals, and other contaminants from water.

Reverse Osmosis Purification Process
High pressure is used to drive water through a specific reverse osmosis membrane in this kind of water treatment. The membrane will eliminate all contaminants from the water, including those that are minuscule.

But this isn't the end of the story.

Reverse osmosis systems often have numerous stages of filtration, each of which removes a different material from the water. A mineral filter is frequently used at the end of the chain to reintroduce important minerals into the water.

As a result, drinking water from reverse osmosis systems is quite beneficial. Furthermore, these minerals help the taste of your water, so reverse osmosis water tastes crisp and pleasant.

Reverse osmosis devices are often designed to fit beneath your sink and connect to your home's main water line. They will have their own dedicated faucet where you can access purified water on demand.

The filters will need to be updated around twice a year, or more frequently in some systems. They can be adjusted to include as many filtration stages as you want. Because of their versatility, RO systems might be costly to purchase at first.

Distillation Process
Distillation is a particularly precise method of water purification. This method requires boiling the water to create steam. Any pollutants and toxins are left behind when the water boils. The steam is then collected in a condenser and cooled down.

As the temperature drops, the steam condenses back into a liquid condition. The water drops are then put through a final carbon post-filter, which eliminates any contaminants that may have boiled off with the water.

The end product is perfectly pure water with a dissolved solids content of only one part per million. Naturally, this means that there are no minerals present to benefit your health or provide flavor to the water.

The Benefits of Distilled Water
  • Distilled water contains fewer minerals than tap water, making it more acceptable for people who have specific health concerns or are taking medications that can interfere with mineral absorption.

  • Distilled water is frequently used for cleaning and sterilizing, therefore it is ideal for cleaning your home.
  • It is especially good for skin and hair if you live in a location where tap water includes a high level of chlorine or other contaminants such as fluoride.
The Benefits of RO Water
  • The reverse osmosis method removes dangerous chemicals, germs, pathogens, and other impurities from tap water, making it a safe and healthful option.

  • Distilled water has a low pH level, which can be harmful to the human body over time, especially if consumed on a daily basis.

  • Distillation takes longer than ordinary filtration systems, making ready-to-use filtered water difficult to offer on demand.

  • Because distilled water boils at 100 degrees Celsius, pollutants having a lower boiling point will not be eliminated.

  • Bottled distilled water can harm the environment due to the use of plastic bottles and their disposal.

Which is healthier for you?
Given that the majority of people are looking for better water sources to improve their health, it makes sense to question which of these purified waters is better for you.

While both of these technologies remove everything from the water, including vital minerals, reverse osmosis systems typically go a step further by reintroducing those minerals. Drinking mineral-free water will not make you deficient, but removing a source of essential minerals from your diet should be done with prudence.

If you opt to drink distilled water, make sure to eat sufficient mineral-rich veggies to avoid deficiency.

In modern times, the quality to which water must be purified is typically set by government agencies. Whether set locally, nationally, or internationally, government standards typically set maximum concentrations of harmful contaminants that can be allowed in safe water.
